83 kinds of potato: a farming story from Peru
At Crop Diversity Day in New York on September 25, guests heard how farmers in Peru grow many potato varieties together.
On September 25, 2026, guests at the New York Botanical Garden heard a story about potatoes from Peru. It was part of Crop Diversity Day, which was held at the garden during Climate Week NYC. The Crop Trust and its partners organize the event every year in a different place. In 2024 it was held in Rabat, and in 2025 it took place in Lima.
The Crop Trust is an international non-profit organization that works to conserve crop diversity. According to the Crop Trust, more than 25,000 plant species have been used as food around the world. At the event, guests also saw the launch of the latest World Food Map. The map, which is based at Wageningen University and Research, brings together three kinds of information. It shows what people eat, where food plants grow and how well these plants are conserved.
