New wheels for desert trails

9 min · B1 · Intermediate · Oct 20, 2026

Five national parks in Utah now lend all-terrain wheelchairs for sand, rocks and steps.

Five national parks in southern Utah now have special wheelchairs for rough trails. The U.S. National Park Service shared the news on October 8. The parks are Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands and Arches, and each one has at least one chair.

These parks are famous for red rock canyons, tall stone towers and wide desert views. But many of their trails are not paved. They are covered with sand, loose stones and rocky steps. For many visitors who use a wheelchair, this kind of ground can be very difficult.
