Why the world celebrates the post on October 9
On October 9, 2026, the Universal Postal Union marked World Post Day, the anniversary of its creation in 1874.
Every year on October 9, countries around the world celebrate World Post Day. The day was declared in 1969, at a Universal Postal Congress held in Tokyo. It marks the anniversary of the creation of the Universal Postal Union, or UPU, in 1874. The theme for World Post Day 2026 was “One postal network, infinite possibilities.”
The story began in September 1874, when representatives from 22 nations met at a conference in Bern, Switzerland. On October 9, they signed the Treaty of Bern, which created the General Postal Union. So many countries joined that its name was changed to the Universal Postal Union in 1878. Today, the UPU has 192 member countries, and its headquarters are in Bern.
