EU fuel prices rise 31.4 percent in a year

20 min · B2 · Upper intermediate · Oct 26, 2026

Eurostat figures published on October 21 show how much fuel prices rose in each EU country from September 2025 to September 2026.

On October 21, 2026, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, published new figures on the price of fuel for cars and other personal vehicles. In September 2026, these prices in the EU were 31.4 percent higher than in September 2025. The yearly increase had grown quickly over the summer, from 16.9 percent in July to 23.8 percent in August. In 26 of the 27 EU countries, the rise in September was bigger than in both of those months.

The figures come from the harmonised index of consumer prices, or HICP, which Eurostat uses to measure inflation in the EU. The index follows the prices that households pay for a fixed basket of goods and services. The national statistical institutes of the member states calculate it according to shared definitions, so that the results can be compared across EU countries. In this index, the fuel group includes diesel and petrol, as well as lubricants, the oils that help the moving parts of an engine run smoothly.
