Autumn colors in Poland’s mountain forests
A satellite view of beech forests, high meadows and the science of changing leaves.
A new satellite image shows the first colors of autumn in the Bieszczady Mountains in southeast Poland. The Landsat 9 satellite took the picture on October 8, and NASA shared it on October 19. Much of the forest is still green, but gold and brown colors are starting to appear on the hills.
Most of the trees here are European beech, and there are also some sycamore maples. When the air gets cooler and the days get shorter, these trees make less chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the green substance that plants use to make food from sunlight. As the green fades, yellow and red colors in the leaves become easier to see.
