EU food waste: 129 kilograms per person in 2024
Eurostat figures show how much food waste the EU generated in 2024, and how much came from homes, restaurants, shops, factories and farms.
In 2024, the European Union produced about 129 kilograms of food waste for every person living there, according to Eurostat, the EU's statistics office. Eurostat published the data on September 29, 2026, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.
The total for the whole EU was 57.9 million tonnes, which was 0.7 percent more than the 57.5 million tonnes recorded in 2023. This total includes edible food, which was meant to be eaten, as well as inedible parts such as bones and fruit cores. Crops that are never harvested are not counted in these figures.
