Coffee gets its first official UN day
On October 1, 2026, the first UN International Coffee Day honored the millions of farmers who grow the world's coffee.
On October 1, 2026, International Coffee Day was marked as an official United Nations day for the first time. The Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO, held a celebration at its headquarters in Rome. Its theme was to celebrate coffee and to honor the people behind every cup.
The idea of a special day for coffee is not new. In 2014, members of the International Coffee Organization agreed to celebrate coffee together every year on October 1. October 1 is traditionally the first day of the coffee year, and in many growing regions, the harvest starts then. On March 10, 2026, the UN General Assembly officially named October 1 as International Coffee Day. FAO was asked to help organize the day, working closely with the International Coffee Organization.
