A test site for wave power opens off Oregon
PacWave South opened off Newport, Oregon, on August 27, 2026. No wave machine had been tested there when it opened.
Ocean waves are always moving, and engineers are developing many kinds of machines that can turn this movement into electricity. On August 27, 2026, a new place for testing these machines officially opened in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Oregon. It is called PacWave South, and it is run by Oregon State University, which is often called OSU.
Most of the money came from the U.S. Department of Energy, which gave OSU 35 million dollars in 2016. The department calls PacWave South the first wave energy test site of its kind in the continental United States. It is fully working, it is connected to the power grid, and the permits for testing are already in place. These permits were arranged in advance so that developers can test their machines without a long and costly wait. The opening came after about 15 years of planning, design and building, and around 150 people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
