Hanoi celebrates 950 years of Quoc Tu Giam
Quoc Tu Giam was founded in 1076, six years after Van Mieu was built. The main ceremony is planned for November 14, 2026.
Hanoi is celebrating 950 years of Quoc Tu Giam, a school that is often called Vietnam's first national university. The city's plan for the anniversary was signed on March 14, 2026, and several events have already taken place. The main ceremony is planned for the evening of November 14, 2026, at the historic site on Quoc Tu Giam Street.
The history of the site begins with two dates that are only six years apart. In 1070, King Ly Thanh Tong ordered the building of Van Mieu, the Temple of Literature, to honor Confucius. In 1076, King Ly Nhan Tong founded Quoc Tu Giam, a school known in English as the Imperial Academy. This is why the 950 years are counted from 1076, not from 1070. Today, the temple and the old school form one historic site, known as Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam.
