NASA's Roman telescope passes its first checks

Launched on August 30, NASA's wide-view telescope is working well, and its main camera is sharper than its team predicted.

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has passed its first checks in space. Since its launch on August 30, 2026, engineers have been testing its instruments one by one. On October 14, NASA reported that the main camera was working well and that its images would be even sharper than the team had predicted.

Roman lifted off on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It is now heading for a point in space called L2, about one million miles from Earth, where it will settle into its final orbit. Because the telescope was completed ahead of schedule, NASA and SpaceX moved the launch to an earlier date. NASA's leader described the mission as a success that had been delivered early and within its budget. The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer.
