Seeds from 21 genebanks reach an Arctic vault
The October 13 deposit added 16,676 samples of rice, wheat, buckwheat and other crops to Norway's Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
On October 13, 2026, genebanks from around the world sent new seeds to a vault in the Arctic. In total, 21 genebanks deposited 16,676 seed samples in 47 boxes at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway. A genebank stores seeds of crops so that farmers and scientists can use them in the future.
The vault opened in 2008 on Svalbard, a group of islands halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Its storage area is more than 100 meters inside a mountain, where the seeds are kept at minus 18 degrees Celsius. The rock around the vault is always frozen, so the seeds would stay frozen for a long time even without electricity. After this deposit, the vault holds more than 1.4 million seed samples from over 130 genebanks.
