Halfway to 2030, UN talks check promises for nature
The UN Biodiversity Conference opened in Yerevan on October 19 to review progress on a 2022 plan to protect nature.
On October 19, the 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference opened in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. Its main meeting is called COP17 because it is the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. This UN agreement is about protecting the variety of life on Earth, which is known as biodiversity. It has 196 Parties, and one of them is the European Union rather than a single country. The conference was scheduled to run until October 30.
The timing of the meeting matters. In December 2022, the Parties adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a plan to halt and reverse the loss of nature by 2030. It sets 23 targets for 2030 and four long-term goals for 2050. COP17 arrived at the halfway stage, four years after the plan was adopted and four years before its main deadline. For this reason, the Parties were due to carry out the first global review of their shared progress in Yerevan.
