Clean water for drought-hit families in Indonesia
On October 14, 2026, the EU said it was giving 200,000 euros to help the Indonesian Red Cross bring safe water to about 200,000 people.
In a statement from Jakarta dated October 14, 2026, the European Union announced that it was giving 200,000 euros to help families affected by a long drought in Indonesia. The money supports the Indonesian Red Cross, which delivers safe water to communities using water tanker trucks and pick-up vehicles. According to the EU, the aid will benefit around 200,000 people in the worst-affected areas.
In much of Indonesia, a dry season comes every year, so a few months with little rain are normal. In 2026, however, the lack of rain has lasted longer than usual across parts of Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. As a result, household wells, springs and small reservoirs have dropped or dried up in many places. In some districts of Central Java, families have been traveling several kilometers a day to reach water or waiting in line for deliveries, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, or IFRC.
