Traffic noise may affect some people more than others
On October 26, 2026, the EEA said that children, older adults and people with heart disease may be more affected by transport noise.
On October 26, 2026, the European Environment Agency, or EEA, published a short report on transport noise and health. According to the agency, noise from road traffic, railways and aircraft affects the whole population. However, some groups of people may suffer more harm to their health than others.
In a report in 2025, the EEA measured the size of the problem. It found that more than one in five Europeans are exposed to harmful levels of transport noise. Road traffic is the biggest source, with about 92 million people exposed to road noise above 55 decibels. This is the level used in EU noise reporting, as an average over the day, evening and night. For railways, the number is about 18 million, and for aircraft it is about 2.6 million.

Older adults may also be more vulnerable, partly because many health problems linked to noise are more common at older ages.
